I’m a big fan of the Grand Theft Auto games - over and over again, I’m surprised at all the little ways in which they mimic real life.
For instance, your character freely walks/drives from one location to another, meets up with specific friends or business partners and then does things with them (your “missions”). Those people appear as symbols on your map, and hover over the screen as a heads-up display while you’re walking around. Then you meet more people through those initial contacts, and their symbols are added to your radar. It all ends up looking like this:

Now that free mapping software (like Google Earth) has become so advanced that a custom satellite map can be used from a cell phone, anyone can have a working, helpful Grand Theft Auto map of their life right now.
This is a shot of my Google Earth map, pointed at the East Village:

I’ve set up categories that correspond to different parts of my life, like friends, tech resources, bars/restaurants, music venues, art venues, memories, etc. Then I assign a custom icons to the categories (friends are stormtroopers) and go from there. It’s nice to see a visual representation of everything around you as it relates to you, especially when you’re trying to figure out what you want to do for the day.
I wonder if the GEarth .kmz files are accessible from an iPhone?
